Tuesday 3 January 2023 – Navenby to Wissant (France)

Happy New Year!

After a pleasant few days with Mum we planned and managed to leave early to try for an earlier crossing so avoiding travelling in France in the dark. Terry had contracted a minor chest infection which developed into quite a heavy cold but medication left him okay with driving so a nice steady run on busy roads with no hold-ups. We managed to despatch a suicidal pigeon with a wing mirror, no damage to us but the bird would have had a headache, otherwise making good time and arrived at our rendezvous with plenty of time to spare.

A quick bite of lunch then refill the fuel tank, expecting fuel to be more expensive in France (it was but not by much) then on to the Eurotunnel. Since our last trip the regulations about travelling into the EU with dogs have changed. We've simplified this by getting Jamie an EU (Irish) Pet Passport but we still needed to check in at the Pet Reception area for the documents to be approved.

No problem and we were able to catch the very next train, about an hour earlier than booked, which meant that once across it was still daylight and made our first drive on the wrong side of the road for three years that much easier. We much prefer to use the tunnel crossing; Bren doesn't like ships and we can stay with Jamie during the crossing, plus it's only half an hour platform to platform.

The Aire de Camping Cars at Wissant is only 15 minutes and is quite popular but for a change was less than half full so we found parking and settled down for the evening, enjoying a catch-up with our friends.

The weather has been cold, dull and showery all day and the forecast is much the same for the next few days so we planned to take the most direct route south. We're really looking forward to some proper warm sunshine again!
